S2 Episode #04: Melissa Camara Wilkins

The One With Melissa Camara Wilkins

Melissa Camara Wilkins is the author of Permission Granted (Zondervan, 2019), an award-winning blogger and host of an online community that explores what it means to be who you were made to be and let go of the rest. She and her husband have six children and live in Southern California.

Permission Granted goes beyond your typical mantras of minimalism to commend a new kind of simplicity, one that happens on the inside. As Melissa learns, keeping it simple on a soul level enables us to stop sweating about the rest. And that is real freedom.

MORE ABOUT MELISSA + THE BOOK:

It all started when Melissa Wilkins showed up at her therapist’s office, her sixth baby bouncing on her lap, her hair freshly washed with a very on-trend headband, nude lipstick, and new jeans, when her therapist suddenly said—

“You know, you can show up here in your pajamas. I don’t care what you wear.”

Sometimes it takes just one true sentence to suck all the air out of a room. Suddenly Melissa realized, in her own words, “I was dressed like I was on my way to a brunch date instead of to an appointment with a postpartum specialist because I was deeply depressed. Sure, it had taken everything in me to get ready; I couldn’t even drive myself to her office afterward. The thought of having to find a parking space made me want to give up and cancel the appointment. My husband had put me in the car and deposited me in the waiting room.”

Then her therapist said another true sentence: “You’re working so hard to look like you’re fine that you don’t have any energy left to actually get better.”

The point is, as Melissa realized: we’re all faking, and we’re all experts.

The only problem is the faking actually makes life MORE complicated. So Melissa decided, then and there, to stage a wild experiment: what if instead of perpetually trying to be “better,” she devoted her energies to showing up truer instead? What if she gave herself the permission slip to be her imperfect, true self? Could that make life simpler? She thought very possibly yes, and decided to give it a shot.

The result of her wild experiment is the story told in Permission Granted: Be Who You Were Made to Be and Let Go of the Rest, and in these pages, Melissa’s permission slip becomes yours. Permission Granted goes beyond your typical mantras of minimalism to commend a new kind of simplicity, one that happens on the inside. As Melissa learns, keeping it simple on a soul level enables us to stop sweating about the rest. And that is real freedom.
