THE ONE WITH THE 2ND ANNIVERSARY!

Last year’s Fall Retreat with an incredible group of women! Click on the image to learn more about our retreat options!

This week we are celebrating our TWO YEAR anniversary here at The Collected Podcast! For our Season 2 finale, it's just Tia and Jes. We are sharing a message about stepping out of hopelessness and claiming your rightful place at The King's Table.

This is a message that was developed for a retreat that we hosted last Fall. Listen in, enjoy, and start dreaming about how we can collaborate in 2021! That's right! We're pumped to be thinking about how we can start planning events beginning toward the middle of next year.

2 Samuel 9:1-13

The Characters:

David-- The King of Israel, took over after Saul

Mephibosheth-- son of Jonathan

  • Lame in both his feet

    • 2 Sam 4:4 tells us that he was not born lame! When he was 5 years old the news about the deaths of Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel and his nurse picked up Mephibosheth and fled. In her hurry to leave, he fell and became disabled. His disability may have been a constant reminder that he no longer belonged in the royal family.

  • Last living relative of Saul, lives in Lo Debar

Lo Debar--

  • “Debar” -- literally meaning ‘word’ or ‘thing’

  • “Lo” -- negative prefix

  • Therefore, Lo Debar literally means “no thing”, “no word” … word=life… so “no life”?

Mephibosheth found himself in a place of no hope/ no life when he was called to the King’s Table.

Mephibosheth is summoned by David. Imagine that you are Mephibosheth Living in a place of hopelessness. You are the last remaining relative of an overthrown dynasty. You know the tradition of your time (in the Ancient Near East) when founding a new dynasty, was that the new king would kill any remaining relatives of the old dynasty to ensure that no one tries to rise up against him.

So how do you feel when you are summoned by the new king? Mephibosheth may have found himself in Lo Debar because he was hiding in fear for his life.

Mephibosheth didn’t realize that the whole time he had nothing to fear. David was a King of mercy, kindness, and grace.

Mephibosheth’s inaccurate view of the King caused him to hide in unnecessary fear and shame.

When we have an inaccurate view of the King, we then have an inaccurate view of who we are, we will seek after the things that we actually already have access to. Share the story of feeling hopeless, wanting to be hopeful  and holy spirit showing me that I am hope-filled.

Verse 7- David greets Mephibosheth with “Don’t be afraid.” David was not summoning Mephibosheth to kill him; rather to give him a seat at the table. This is a picture of God’s work in Christ. While we are sinners, deserving of death, He made us his daughters, clothing us in righteousness, granting us a seat at his table.

  • Romans 5:6-8 -- “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us.”

  • Luke 15:11-32 -- Like the Father in the parable of the lost son, God’s people are welcomed home-- not as slaves or condemned, but with celebration as returning sons and daughters!

Like Mephibosheth, people who are followers of Jesus have nothing to fear because we are adopted into his family. Our price has been paid and we have a seat at the table.

You must Believe You Belong and remain seated at the table.

This transition from dwelling in despair to sitting confidently at the King’s table and enjoying all the benefits of being His can be a major shift. And it plays out in every part of our lives. We have to identify the catalyst that takes us from the natural where we deal with the things of this life on earth to the supernatural where King is seated. That transformative element is always Jesus, but He adds something specific to every earthly situation we might find ourselves in.

Let’s look at a few that we’ve likely all been dealing with in 2020:

Allowing Jesus to shepherd us is how we remain seated.

PSALM 23:4-5

Note: Scholars believe this was written by David when he was already King. he had been a shepherd and he was not ashamed of his former occupation. Instead, he recognized how it shaped him into the man who would one day be King-- it was his training ground.

4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.

6 “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

NOTES:

“Walk through”- under the shepherds leading we may walk through, but it isn’t a dwelling place.

“Fear no evil”- walking with the LORD doesn’t eliminate the evil, but rather our need to fear it.

“Prepare”- He’s done the work for us! He set it! BELIEVE YOU BELONG!

“My enemies”- a picture of protection-- even in the midst of enemies, I am secure and provided for.

“Anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows”- rich, abundant goodness!

“Dwell in the house of the LORD forever”- THIS is where we dwell!! Not in the valley of verse 4-- we walk through the valley… yet we DWELL in the house of the LORD!
