S2 Episode #27- Chip Ingram

THE ONE WITH CHIP INGRAM

This week we are so excited to talk with Chip Ingram about his latest book, Discover Your True Self: How to Silence the Lies of Your Past and Actually Experience Who God Says You are!

Chip is an author, teacher, pastor, and CEO of Living on the Edge— an international teaching and discipleship ministry.

In this episode, we dive into how we can reclaim our God-given identity and replace our misbeliefs with His Truth. As you listen, allow your heart to hear and believe the truth that you are wanted, valuable, secure, competent, beautiful, and called!

R E A D

The world tells us that “you are what you achieve + other people’s opinions”. Growing up, Chip was desperate to prove that he could measure up. He grew up in the performance orientation, so beginning to understand grace was a long journey.

God takes our small “yeses” and uses them to take us on a journey that we could never have expected!

Chip’s new book, Discover Your True Self: How to Silence the Lies of Your Past and Actually Experience Who God Says You Are, is based on the first 3 chapters of Ephesians. Paul uses the phrase “IN CHRIST” 35 times… and 33 of them are in the book of Ephesians.

Ephesians tells us who we are and how we can live in light of our God-given identity.

So you are “in Christ”, but what does that mean in our daily lives?

The first paragraph of Ephesians tells you that “you are chosen and adopted by God.” This means he really loves you and wants you to be a part of his family. So, if that is the answer, what is the problem? The problem here is rejection.

Chip’s book goes through 6 major doctrines and handles the corresponding issue.

We may struggle with…

  • Fear

  • Shame

  • Guilt

  • Insignificance

  • Angst

  • Rejection

BUT GOD SAYS:

You are beautiful, you belong,

you have significance, You are wanted,

You are valuable, You are secure,

You are competent, You are called!

So often we think our issue is our marriage, job, relationship, etc… but the real issue is a misbelief.

For Example…

Misbelief: I will never be happy without the approval of the most important people in my life.

Truth: I would like for people to like me, but I don’t need them to because I am already accepted by Christ.  -- 2 Corinthians 5:17

ADOPTION

In New Testament times, people did not adopt babies. If they needed an heir, they would have been a young man in his early 20s who was the brightest and best in his class. This is the type of person they wanted to be their heir. The moment someone was adopted in Roman Culture, their entire past was expunged and their record was permanently changed. Any debts they had were forgiven, they had full access to the riches and privileges of their new father.

Hearing Paul teach this in a small home church in Ephesus, the early church who have understood not only that they belong, but they have access to everything that the Father has. We do not need to live FOR God’s approval, but rather FROM God’s approval. God’s love is not reliant on our achievements.

OUR DREAM FOR COLLECTED

To see people empowered to know God’s love for them, and to understand that when we see the Father, we see our true identity. If we are In Christ, we can look at Christ and see ourselves. The rest of our life will flow out of that. We want people empowered to understand their true identity and Kingdom purpose, and to be launched into a life of meaning.

A FINAL WORD FROM CHIP

Push the pause button on your life long enough and look at behaviors, challenges and relationships that are not the way you want them, or the way God would want them to be. Then pause again and carve out time to focus on learning how God sees you.

Life change happens when we get focused on seeing ourselves how God sees us. It’s the first domino of amazing change.

“You are not your behavior. You are who the Lord says you are. Full stop.”
