Episode #37- Cheryl Luckett
The One with Cheryl Luckett
Cheryl Luckett is a wildly successful interior designer. She owns her own company, has a furniture line, and has been featured in ALL the design magazines. Most importantly, she loves Jesus and leverages her work for the Kingdom. Cheryl took the path of careful planning and hard work to get to where she is today and her story is sure to inspire you to chase your passion!
Southern Home describes Cheryl Luckett’s style as "opulence in reach” with “vintage treasures and ingenious restyles” as essential tools in her design kit. Cheryl believes her clients should dwell in a home they love; a place that gives them a sense of well-being both indoors and out. She describes her design aesthetic as sophisticated but approachable; easy and livable. Launched in 2012, Dwell by Cheryl Interiors continues to grow with clients raving about Cheryl’s ability to transform a space, as well as her professionalism and attention to detail.
Like Cheryl’s southern roots, her love for design runs deep. Her grandmother could often be found moving furniture in her home to create an environment fitting for the season or her present mood. Further evidence of the genetic link as an entrepreneur and designer is the fact that her great-great-grandmother sold catalog home furnishings to Mississippi neighbors and friends who admired her home and wanted similar pieces.
Cheryl's journey began at Tennessee State University where she earned a BS degree in Family and Consumer Science and learned the fundamentals of design. It was during her time at TSU that she began her initial trek into interior design. In fact, her college dorm room often served as the model used to tour prospective students. She later completed her post-graduate studies at Prairie View A & M University becoming a Registered Dietitian, a credential she continues to maintain. To strengthen her design knowledge, Cheryl returned to school locally and obtained a Residential Interior Design diploma from Central Piedmont Community College in 2017.
For more than 15 years Cheryl worked at a Fortune 500 company in Charlotte, North Carolina where she was initially employed as a Registered Dietitian and subsequently a human resources professional in diversity and inclusion. It was here she developed her service skills and business acumen. After much prayer and consideration, Cheryl left her career in Corporate America to utilize her gift as an interior designer full-time.
Not surprising, she has been published in Traditional Home, Country Living, Southern Home, Charlotte Magazine, Charlotte Home Design and Decor and Hoffman Media’s book Southern Spaces to name a few. She is a seven-time recipient of the Best of Houzz Award for Design and Customer Satisfaction, one of the Black Interior Designers Network's African American Top 20 Designers and in 2019 was named one of Charlotte's Best Interior Designers by Charlotte Agenda.
Cheryl currently serves as Design Ambassador for the Revolution Performance Fabrics brand and in 2018 launched her first licensed product line, a five-piece upholstered furniture collection for Sylvester Alexander Fine Upholstery, called Belle by Cheryl Luckett, which has created quite the buzz!
Her southern roots, natural ability, corporate tenure and continuing education have equipped her to be a multi-faceted creative entrepreneur poised for a successful career in the interior design industry.
